What Is Pediatric Occupational Therapy?

Occupational therapy (OT) helps children develop the foundational skills needed for everyday tasks, from getting dressed and holding a pencil to focusing in class or managing big emotions.

At Thera+Kids, OT is more than just building skills; it’s about helping your child gain confidence, independence, and a sense of accomplishment.

Our Occupational Therapists Support Children Who

  • Struggle with fine motor skills (e.g., handwriting, using scissors, buttoning clothes, etc.)

  • Have difficulty with gross motor coordination (e.g., climbing, balancing, catching a ball, etc.)

  • Experience sensory sensitivities or sensory-seeking behaviors

  • Have trouble self-regulating (e.g., managing frustration, staying calm, following routine, etc.)

  • Avoid or resist self-care tasks like brushing teeth, washing hands, or tying shoes

  • Struggle to focus, sit still, or transition between activities

  • Have trouble planning, organizing, or completing tasks

  • Are easily overwhelmed in busy, noisy environments

What to Expect: Our 3-Step Process

Step 1: Individualized Assessment

We begin with an evaluation of your child’s motor, sensory, emotional, or functional skills. The assessment information is based upon play-based observations, caregiver interview,s and sometimes standardized assessment tools.

Our therapists take time to understand your child’s strengths and areas of need.

Step 2: Personalized Treatment Plan

Using the assessment results, we create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your child’s needs, learning style, and goals. Therapy sessions are:

  • Play-based and engaging

  • Rooted in evidence-based techniques

  • Adapted for your child’s age, attention span, and personality

We utilize games, obstacle courses, fine motor activities, sensory exercises, and mindfulness tools, all while working on functional goals.

Step 3: Family Involvement & Collaboration

Caregivers are central to our approach. We ensure to:

  • Share updates and progress regularly

  • Provide strategies to use at home and at school

  • Collaborate with teachers, SLPs, and other professionals as needed

Our goal is to help your child succeed not only in therapy but also in real life.
